In any craft, there are things that you should consider, from the proper equipment and tools that should be used to the learning of the basics of doing the craft right. Apart from having the learned knowledge and skills in the craft and having the right equipment, there are other things that you should consider including the proper way of maintaining your tools. Understanding how the proper way of maintaining these items determines the integrity of the tools making them still useable even after a couple instances of use. In clay craft, you should be particular with the proper way of maintaining your clay blades. Clay blades are you primary tools knowing that you will be cutting these clays before you form or sculpture them in any shape that you wish them to take.
For instance, having a complete set of clay kit tools will still be useless if they are no longer as useful as they should be, thinking that in blades, they are not sharpened enough to cut through layers of clay. There are certain things that you need to consider and learn to properly maintain your tools. Simple steps yet very important to make sure that you get to enjoy the craft a little more by experience each time you get into molding and creating clay products.
Things like the proper cleaning, washing and storage are very important and crucial. Despite your tools being made from quality materials without the proper maintenance, it will still end up dysfunctional or non-useful. Always make sure that you have a plain surface that is suitable for cutting clay. Find a surface that will not cause any damage to your clay blades when they get in contact with them.
After every use, learn to take the initiative to make it a habit to always wash the blades after use, wiping and washing off clay debris from the edges before they harden, allow them to drip and wipe them off before storing them. Do not allow them to be in your storage cabinet when they are still wet and of course have the right storage for these. Do not just put your clay blades anywhere. This serves two purposes, for safety and for the assurance that your blades remain well sharpened and clean when not in use. These are simple things that you should remember, simple things that aren’t that difficult to do but most of the time become taken for granted. Be a responsible artist, a responsible owner and a responsible clay craft artist.
