If you are interested, here are some basic steps to guide you through making your own clay beads.
1. Get everything that you will need. Having all the necessary materials will make the process a lot easier. Some of the things that you will need are the pre-made cane, tissue blade, knitting needle or exacto-knife or stylus, wax paper, polymer clay and the wood beads of which size will depend on how you want them to be.
2. Prepare your work station. Take note that polymer clay is soft, this means that it can take up anything that it comes in contact with, make sure that you keep your work space as clean as possible. Choose a work space that will provide you with good lighting. This is very important especially if you are working on small crafts like beads. You may now tape down your wax paper and make sure it fits snuggly, ascertain there’d be no crinkles in the middle.
3. Make your slices. Pick the cane you’d use and start cutting slices from one end. Make sure that you make slices that are thin but never too thin as these are see through; make fairly evened out slices.
4. Cover up. Select the wood bead to cover. Make sure that you clay follows and takes on the shape of the bead you choose.
5. Roll them. After you have covered the bead but still find some little spaces that can be seen, set your bead down on the wax paper, place your finger on top of it applying gentle pressure and slowly roll the bead around underneath your finger until all spaces are covered.
6. Make a Hole. We know how beads have holes in the middle where you can then have nylon pass through in making accessories, if the hole has been covered partially from the rolling that you did earlier, get your knitting needle to pierce open the hole.
7. Bake. These clays bake in 10 minutes at around 200 degrees in a conventional oven.
